– Awami League (AL) General Secretary and
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today said the
country’s people are the key strength of AL President and Prime
Minister Sheikh Hasina’s politics.
“Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina had enormous courage as she
didn’t do any misdeed. So, no conspiracy could bar Sheikh Hasina from
returning home on May 7, 2007,” he told a regular press conference at
his residence recalling Sheikh Hasina’s homecoming on May 7.
Quader said May 7 is a memorable day to the democracy-loving people
of Bangladesh.
On this day in 2007, Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina returned
home en route to London, after receiving treatments in the United
States, defying all obstacles and conspiracy to restore the country’s
democracy during the state of emergency declared by the then military
backed caretaker government, he said.
He said as Sheikh Hasina was born to a political family, she
witnessed different aspects and change of courses in history.
Sheikh Hasina’s father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was her
political mentor and she loves the people as like as his father, he
mentioned.
The AL general secretary said as Sheikh Hasina returned home on that
day defying all obstacles to free democracy from captivity, the then
caretaker government had been forced to leave the power by holding the
general elections fowling pressure created by the pressure.
He said Awami League led Grand Alliance attained a landslide victory
in the December 29, 2008 general elections and then formed the
government.
After assuming office as the prime minister for the second time,
Sheikh Hasina began struggle to build the country as a happy and
prosperous nation after retrieving it from crisis.
He said Sheikh Hasina freed the nation from stigma by bringing
Bangabandhu’s killers and war criminals to justice.
Quader said because of her diplomatic efficiency, Bangladesh settled
longstanding maritime and land boundary issues with neighboring
countries.
He said Bangladesh is now marching forward on the highway of
development in an indomitable pace under the dynamic leadership of
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Quader said by launching Bangabandhu Satellite-1, Sheikh Hasina
reached the dream to space.
Under the domestic funds, the construction work of much-anticipated
Padma Bridge is now at the final stage while the works of Bangabandhu
tunnel beneath Karnaphuli river in Chattogram and metro-rail in Dhaka
are progressing fast, he said.
The AL general secretary said Bangladesh’s role in tackling the
first wave of coronavirus outbreak has been lauded at home and abroad.
When many developed countries reeled under the spike of
coronavirus, Bangladesh has been able to contain the spread of the
deadly virus a little bit under the bold and prudent leadership of
Sheikh Hasina, he said.
He said Sheikh Hasina’s homecoming on May 7 is a significant
incident in the history of the country’s democratic struggles,
development and progress.
Quader said every year many programmes are arranged to mark the day
but this year programmes has been called off in view of the
coronavirus outbreak at the directives of Sheikh Hasina.
He urged the people as well as all the leaders and workers of the
party to offer ‘doa’ for good health and long life of Prime Minister
Sheikh Hasina staying at home.
Quader also requested all to observe the Sheikh Hasina’s historic
homecoming day on May 17 recalling her returning home on that day in
1981 by arranging milad mahfil and special prayers at mosques,
temples, pagodas and churches.
