The 73rd birth anniversary of Sheikh Kamal, the eldest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was observed today in a befitting manner.
Different sports and socio-cultural organizations, including the ruling Awami League, chalked out elaborate programmes to observe the day.
Awami League (AL) and its associate bodies paid homage to Sheikh Kamal by placing floral wreaths at his portrait on the premises of Abahani Club at Dhanmondi this morning.
Wreaths were also laid at his grave at Banani Graveyard. Quran Khwani, milad and doa mahfil were arranged in the capital.
On behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, AL General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader paid glowing tributes to Sheikh Kamal by placing wreaths at his grave.
Later, Quader along with party’s senior leaders also laid wreaths on behalf of the party.
The AL general secretary said when the month of August appears, the murderous character of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) gets desperate as the party is afraid in facing the truth of this month.
AL Presidium Members Begum Matia Chowdhury and Agriculture Minister Dr Muhammad Abdur Razzaque, Joint General Secretaries Mahbubul Alam Hanif and Bahauddin Nasim, Organizing Secretaries Ahmed Hossain, BM Mozammel Haque, Afzal Hossain and Mirza Azam and Office Secretary Barrister Biplab Barua were present on the occasion.
One-minute silence was also observed on the occasion. Prayers were held seeking eternal peace of the departed soul.
Dhaka city south mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, Dhaka city north mayor Atiqul Islam and State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid also placed wreaths at his grave.
Later, AL’s Dhaka city north and south units, Jubo League, Mahila League, Chhatra League, Swechchhasebak League, Krishak League and other associate and likeminded bodies also placed wreaths at his grave.
Under the initiative of AL relief and social welfare sub-committee, seeds of vegetables, fruits and mustard were distributed among marginal farmers of Tungipara and Kotalipara upazila in Tungipara upazila parishad auditorium in Gopalganj.
AL Joint General Secretary and Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud joined and addressed it as the chief guest.
With AL Relief and Social Welfare Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi in the chair, AL Organizing Secretary SM Kamal Hossain and Gopalganj district AL General Secretary Mahbub Ali Khan spoke on the occasion as the special guests.
Moderated by AL deputy office secretary Sayem Khan, the function was addressed by Kotalipara AL president Bhabendra Nath Biswas and Tungipara AL general secretary Md Babul Sheikh, among others.
Marking the birth anniversary, special doa and milad mahfil was arranged after Jummah prayers at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque under the initiative of the Islamic Foundation (IF).
Awami Swechchhasebak League arranged discussion, doa and milad mahfil and distribution of foods for distressed people on the premises of Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi road number 32.
AL Presidium Member Lt Col (retd) Faruque Khan joined it as the chief guest.
AL forest and environment sub-committee also arranged a discussion in Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) auditorium on Dhaka University campus this afternoon.
Party’s Presidium Member and Agriculture Minister Dr Muhammad Abdur Razzaque addressed it as the chief guest.
In the morning, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina distributed Sheikh Kamal National Sports Council Award-2022 among nine sports personalities and two organizations in seven categories.
The premier joined the award distribution ceremony virtually in city’s Osmani Memorial Auditorium from her official residence Ganabhaban.
On behalf of the Prime Minister, State Minister for Youth and Sports Md. Zahid Ahsan Russel handed over the awards among the recipients.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports has nominated nine sports personalities and two organisations in seven categories for the prestigious Sheikh Kamal National Sports Council (NSC) Award in 2022.
Veteran sports organizer Harunur Rashid received lifetime award, while Liton Kumar Das (cricket), Abdullah Hel Baki (shooting) and Mollah Sabira Sultana (weightlifting) were given the award in sport personality category.
Other recipients are Diya Siddique (Archery) and Mohammad Shariful Islam (Cricket) in emerging athlete category, Saidur Rahman Patel and Nazma Shamim in sports organizer category, Bangladesh Olympic Association in Sports association, federation and sports organisation category, Green Delta Insurance Company Limited in sports sponsor and Kashinath Bashak in sports journalist category.
The Directorate of Posts also released a commemorative postage stamp of Taka 10, an opening day cover of Tk 10, a data card of Tk 5 and a special seal marking the birth anniversary of Sheikh Kamal.
Post and Telecommunication Minister Mustafa Jabbar unveiled those from his office here.
Besides, Abahani Limited chalked out day-long programmes to observe the birth anniversary of its founder Shaheed Sheikh Kamal.
The directors, officials and players of Abahani Club paid tribute to Sheikh Kamal by placing wreaths at his portrait on the club premises in the early hours of Friday and offered special prayers seeking eternal peace for the departed soul of Kamal.
The programmes also included day-long recitation from the Holy Quran, a virtual discussion on the life and works of Sheikh Kamal at 4 pm and doa mahfil at the club Bhaban after the Asar prayers.
Born on August 5, 1949 at Tungipara in Gopalganj, Sheikh Kamal was a former executive member of the central committee of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of Awami League (AL).
After passing secondary examination from Shahin School and higher secondary exam from Dhaka College, Sheikh Kamal obtained his Bachelor of Arts (BA) from Social Science Department of Dhaka University.
He was also a student of Setar musical department of Chayanat, a reputed cultural entity in the country.
Kamal was not only the founder of Abahani Krira Chakra, one of the best sports organizations in the subcontinent and pioneer of modern football in Bangladesh, he was also a founder-member of Dhaka Theatre.
He was well-known as an actor in the Dhaka University’s drama arena.
Since his boyhood, Kamal was very much enthusiastic about different sports including football, cricket, hockey and basket-ball.
Sheikh Kamal was commissioned in the Muktibahini after receiving training from the first war course in independent Bangladesh and served as ADC of General MAG Osmani, the commander-in-chief of the Liberation War in 1971.
After the country’s independence, Sheikh Kamal retired from the army and paid attention to the study.
Kamal was a Master’s (final year) examinee and a member of the Jatiya Chhatra League central committee, a wing of Bangladesh Krishak, Sramik Awami League (BAKSAL), when he embraced martyrdom on August 15 in 1975 at the age of 26.
