Deaths exceed 4,300 as catastrophic quakes ravage Turkey, Syria

The screams of people still trapped in the rubble filled the night early on Tuesday and relatives wept for their loved ones as the death toll in Turkey and in neighbouring northwest Syria rose to more than 4,300.

The magnitude 7.8 quake rippled through both countries early on Monday, toppling entire apartment blocks, wrecking hospitals, and leaving thousands more people injured or homeless.

Turkey’s relief agency says the death toll from Monday’s earthquakes has climbed to 2,921, BBC reported.

Yunus Sezer, who heads the AFAD agency, said an additional 15,384 people were injured, while 6,217 buildings have collapsed.

Freezing winter weather hampered search efforts for survivors through the night into Tuesday.dhngkfdvn
