Four passengers, including a child, were killed as miscreants set fire to a running train of ‘Mohanganj Express’ at Tejgaon Railway Station in the capital early Tuesday.
Two of the deceased were identified as Nadira Akter Poppy, 35, and her three-year-old son Md Yasin.
The bodies were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Fire Service and Civil Defence control room officer Rakibul Hasan said, “The train caught fire when it was leaving Tejgaon rail station around 5:05am. Receiving information, two fire-fighting units went to the scene and doused the fire at about 5:25am.”
All the four people were the passengers of the train, he added.
Tajgaon Police Station OC Mohammad Mohsin said quoting the passengers that the train was going to Dhaka from Netrakona. When it was crossing Airport station, the passengers saw fire at a carriage behind the train. Then the driver stopped the train at Teajgaon station.
Nadira’s brother Habibur Rahman Habib said Nadira and her two sons–Yasin, and Fahim, 8–went to their village home at Baruna village of Netrakona Sadar upazila on December 3 and today, they were returning to Dhaka by Mohanganj Express.
He said when the train stopped at Tejgaon station, some passengers got down. As soon as the train started moving, the fire started from the back part of the carriage. The fire soon spread to the entire compartment.
Three coaches were damaged in the fire.
