Thousands in Bangladesh celebrate Eid in line with Saudi Arabia

Online Report

Thousands of Muslims across multiple districts in Bangladesh, including Chandpur, Faridpur, Dinajpur, Pirojpur, and Noakhali, observed Eid-ul-Fitr on Sunday—one day ahead of the national celebration—following the moon sighting practices of Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern nations.

In Chandpur, at least 40 villages, including the Sadra Darbar Sharif in Hajiganj Upazila, marked the occasion. Pirzada Mufti Arif Chowdhury of Sadra Darbar Sharif stated that their observance is based on Quranic and Hadith principles, relying on direct moon sightings rather than a centralized national decision. The first Eid congregation in the area was held at 9:00 am at Sadra Darbar Sharif, led by Mufti Zakaria Chowdhury, followed by another at Sadra Hamidia Fazil Madrasa at 9:30 am.

In Dinajpur, approximately 2,000 families from five upazilas participated in early Eid prayers. Over 200 families performed their prayers at a community center in the district town at 8:00 am, with additional congregations in Islambagh, Upashahar, and Fultala. This practice of celebrating Eid in alignment with Saudi Arabia has been followed in these regions since 2007.

In Pirojpur, more than 700 families from 10 villages marked the occasion in accordance with Saudi Arabia’s Eid schedule. The celebrations were particularly prominent in Mathbaria upazila (six villages), Kawkhali upazila (three villages), and Nazirpur upazila (one village), where thousands of worshippers attended morning prayers.

Similarly, in Noakhali, several villages upheld this tradition, with residents gathering at 9:00 am for Eid prayers. The followers of the Qaderia Tariqa, inspired by the teachings of Pir Abu Muhammad Mohiuddin Syed Abdul Qadir Jilani (RA), have been observing Eid in sync with Saudi Arabia for nearly a century. Communities in Laxminarayanpur, Harinarayanpur, Basantabagh, Fazilpur, and Ramballabpur observed Eid a day earlier, as they do each year.

In Faridpur, 10 villages in Boalmari upazila’s Shekhar and Rupapat unions also celebrated Eid on Sunday, in line with the Saudi Arabian calendar.

These communities have maintained their tradition of celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Azha based on the moon sighting in Saudi Arabia, emphasizing their long-standing religious beliefs and practices.
