Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) issued a heavy rainfall warning for six divisions, including the capital on Wednesday.
Under its influence, many places in Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions could face heavy to very heavy rainfall.
The Meteorological Office has also warned that heavy rain could lead to temporary waterlogging in Dhaka and Chattogram cities.
Due to very heavy rainfall, there is a risk of landslides in some hilly areas of Chattogram, Rangamati, Khagrachhari, Bandarban, and Cox’s Bazar districts.
According to the BMD’s circular, a low-pressure system formed over the Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjacent areas and is likely to intensify.
Fishing boats and trawlers in the North Bay of Bengal have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.
Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) indicated that river water levels in the northern, northeastern, and eastern divisions of the country could exceed danger levels due to the heavy rainfall.
FFWC Executive Engineer Sardar Uday Raihan said that water level of the Muhuri River in Feni district could flow close to the danger level on Friday and Saturday and may even exceed it in some places.
Additionally, the water levels of the Sarigowain River in Sylhet, Jadukata River in Sunamganj, Khowai River in Habiganj, and Someshwari River in Netrokona district will rise rapidly. These rivers may also flow near or exceed their danger levels in certain areas, he added.
