Ex-CEC Nurul Huda to be questioned over 2018 election

Online Report

Former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) K M Nurul Huda has been formally shown arrested in a case filed by the opposition BNP with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in Dhaka.

He is currently in the custody of the Detective Branch (DB) of police, where he is being interrogated regarding the allegedly fraudulent 2018 national election.

Nurul Huda was detained by local residents on Sunday evening and handed over to police in Uttara. He was then transferred to the DB office the same night for security reasons and further questioning.

According to Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Huda will be interrogated in relation to accusations that the 2018 election was manipulated under his supervision. BNP filed a case naming 24 individuals, including three former CECs, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, a former home minister, and four former Inspectors General of Police.

Speaking to the media, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station officer-in-charge Md. Imamul Haque confirmed that the case stems from alleged electoral fraud in the 2014, 2018, and 2024 general elections—held during the tenure of the Awami League government.

DMP officials say that Nurul Huda is being questioned about how the 2018 election was allegedly orchestrated, who was involved in planning it, and the role of the Election Commission at the time. Evidence and testimonies collected during interrogation will be presented in court. Authorities plan to seek a remand order for Huda on Monday (June 23).

The BNP had previously submitted formal complaints to the Election Commission in 2018, signed by party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, accusing commission officials of violating the constitution and facilitating electoral manipulation.

As no action was taken, a criminal case (Case No. 11) was officially filed on Sunday (22 June) by BNP National Executive Committee member Salahuddin Khan.
