“The Chief Adviser told us he will announce the election date within the next four to five days. There can be no better news than this,” Mustafa Jamal Haider, Chairman of the Jatiya Party (Kazi Zafar faction), told reporters after the meeting with the Chief Adviser with leaders of 14 political parties at the state guesthouse Jamuna. Earlier, the head of post-uprising government of Bangladesh had held two rounds of meetings with leaders from various political parties and alliances, including the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami. Saturday’s meeting involved representatives from 14 more parties and alliances.
A number of the political parties and lineups go on pressing for specific timeline of election to the parliament that has been lying deserted since August 5, 2024 when the Awami League government fell under a student-mass upheaval.
In the meeting, the Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has said that defeated forces are attempting to disrupt the electoral process by creating unrest. He called on all anti-fascist forces to remain united in order to resist these subversive efforts.
“If all the forces behind the uprising fail to come together to conduct a free and fair election, we will lose this great opportunity,” he said during a meeting with senior leaders of various political parties at the state guest house, Jamuna.
The Chief Adviser stated that whenever the defeated forces get a chance, they try to incite unrest and disrupt the country’s normal progress, said a spokesperson of the CA Office.
“Every time we move forward with election preparations, new conspiracies surface. But the reality is that no conspiracy can hinder the democratic journey. The unity of all democratic forces against fascism is clear,” he said.
He expressed his expectation of cooperation from all political parties to ensure a fair and credible election.
The attending political leaders also assured the Chief Adviser of their full support in this regard.
At the beginning of the meeting, a one-minute silence and prayer (munajat) were held in memory of those who lost their lives in the recent plane crash at Milestone School and College.
