Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s income in 2024 was almost double that of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), while its expenditure was nearly five times higher, according to financial statements submitted to the Election Commission (EC).
As per the reports for the 2024 calendar year, Jamaat declared an income of Tk 28.97 crore and expenses of Tk 23.73 crore. BNP, by contrast, reported Tk 15.65 crore in income and Tk 4.80 crore in expenditure.
BNP’s statement showed its primary sources of income were members’ monthly subscriptions, sales of books and publications, bank interest, and one-time donations.
Jamaat’s filing revealed Tk 16.56 crore came from subscriptions by workers and members, Tk 37.87 lakh from executive committee and advisory council subscriptions, and Tk 11.86 crore in donations from individuals and organisations. Sales of newspapers, periodicals, and books brought in Tk 9.11 lakh, while other sectors contributed Tk 7.21 lakh. The party also carried forward Tk 10.49 crore from the previous year.
On the expenditure side, Jamaat spent Tk 6.57 crore on salaries, allowances, and bonuses for its workers; Tk 26.87 lakh on housing and administrative costs; Tk 2.46 lakh on utilities; Tk 8.44 lakh on postal, telephone, internet, and courier services; and Tk 10.95 lakh on hospitality.
Other major expenses included Tk 2.70 crore on publicity and transport, Tk 1.27 crore on travel, Tk 19.38 lakh on rallies and gatherings, Tk 11.05 crore in donations to candidates, Tk 32.76 lakh on special religious programmes, and Tk 1.12 crore under miscellaneous heads.
The statement, signed by Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar, also noted that the party maintains no bank account.
Under Bangladeshi law, all registered political parties must submit the previous year’s financial report to the EC by July 31 annually.
