The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has requested detailed banking records of three former governors and six former deputy governors of Bangladesh Bank, following a referral from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
In directives issued on Wednesday to all scheduled banks, the BFIU asked for transaction histories, account opening forms, Know Your Customer (KYC) documents, and other relevant financial data related to the individuals. Banks have been given three working days to respond—even for accounts that have been closed.
The former governors include Dr. Atiur Rahman, Fazle Kabir and Abdur Rouf Talukder.
The former deputy governors under scrutiny are SK Sur Chowdhury, Md. Masud Biswas, Abu Hena Mohd. Razee Hassan, SM Moniruzzaman, Kazi Saidur Rahman and Abu Farah Md. Nasser.
The data collection is part of a broader ACC investigation into alleged financial irregularities, misuse of authority, and unexplained wealth accumulation during their tenures.
The BFIU’s role is to compile financial intelligence to support forensic audits and potential legal action. Banks have been instructed to provide the information confidentially and in compliance with anti-money laundering regulations.
This move signals a major step in efforts to ensure accountability within the country’s top financial institutions.
