At least five people were killed and four others injured when a pickup van rammed into a parked covered van in the City Gate area under Akbar Shah Police Station in Chattogram early this morning (18 August).

The accident occurred around 4:55am as the pickup, carrying fish traders from Sitakunda to Chattogram city’s Fishery Ghat, lost control and struck the stationary vehicle on the roadside.

The deceased were identified as Akash Das, 26, Ajit Das, 24, Rony Das, 25, Jewel Das, 18, and Md Sohag, 32, all from Sitakunda upazila.

Police said three of them died on the spot, while two others succumbed to injuries after being taken to hospital.

Confirming the incident, Sub-Inspector Md Sajjad of Akbar Shah Police Station said, “Upon receiving a call on 999, the police and the Fire Service went to the scene and conducted the rescue operation. The bodies are in police custody. Necessary legal action will be taken.”

According to police, there were three people in the front of the pickup and seven in the back. The injured are undergoing treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital.

According to Fire Service and Civil Defence, upon receiving the news of the collision, a unit from Agrabad Fire Station reached the site at 5:05am, about five kilometres from the station, and carried out the rescue operation.
