The election and appeal boards of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) have been reconstituted to oversee the 2025–27 executive committee polls, in compliance with a recent High Court directive.
According to the new formation, Md Abdur Razzak, additional secretary of the commerce ministry, has been appointed chairman of the election board. The two other members are joint secretaries of the ministry—Murshida Zaman and Mustafizur Rahman.
Meanwhile, Md Abdur Rahim Khan, Additional Secretary (Head of Export Wing), Ministry of Commerce, has been named chairman of the election appeal board. The two other members are joint secretaries Tanvir Ahmed and Md Razzakul Islam.
The reconstitution was announced on Thursday by FBCCI administrator Md Hafizur Rahman, following the High Court’s July 22 order that directed the commerce secretary, the director general of the Directorate of Trade Organizations (DTO), and the FBCCI administrator to form new boards and announce a fresh election schedule in line with the law.
Earlier in June, the commerce ministry had formed the boards and announced the election schedule, under which voting was scheduled for September 7. Delegates of the FBCCI general assembly were supposed to elect a president, a senior vice-president, two vice-presidents, and 30 directors. The timeline was later extended by 45 days.
However, businessman Alauddin Al Masum filed a writ petition challenging the legality of the boards, arguing that their formation by the commerce ministry was unlawful under the Trade Organization Act.
Following the court’s directive, and after consultations with the DTO and the commerce ministry, the FBCCI administrator reconstituted both the election and appeal boards, according to the official notification.
