The Appellate Division’s chamber judge on Monday stayed a High Court order that had postponed the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election for two months, effectively clearing the way for the polls to be held on September 9.
Advocate Mohammad Shishir Manir, who represented Dhaka University, confirmed the development, saying the chamber judge’s decision removed the legal barrier to holding the long-awaited election on schedule.
Earlier in the day, a High Court bench of Justice Md Habibul Gani and Justice Sheikh Tahsin Ali had ordered a two-month deferment, pushing the DUCSU polls to October 30, 2025.
the bench of Justice Habibul Gani and Justice Sheikh Tahsin Ali passed the order in response to a writ petition filed by BM Fahmida Alam, a DUCSUcandidate.
The petition challenged the eligibility of SM Farhad, the General Secretary (GS) candidate from Chhatra Shibir–backed panel, alleging that he was a member of the Bangladesh Chhatra League’s committee prior to 5 August 2024. The petitioner questioned how Farhad could then contest under a Shibir-supported panel.
According to the final list published on 26 August, 45 are contesting for Vice-President (VP), 19 for General Secretary (GS), and 25 for Assistant General Secretary (AGS). The largest contest is for member posts, with 217 candidates in the running.
From Shibir-supported panel, Sadiq Kayem is contesting for VP, while SM Farhad is contesting for GS.
With Monday’s order, the university authorities can now proceed with preparations to conduct the election on the previously announced date.
