The US Department of State confirmed the nomination in an official press release. Christensen is currently serving in Washington as an Under Secretary at the Department of State. He previously served in the political section of the US Embassy in Dhaka from 2019 for three years.

Christensen will replace Peter Haas, who retired last year after serving as the US ambassador to Bangladesh. Following Haas’s departure, the Department of State appointed retired diplomat Tracey Ann Jacobson as the chargé d’affaires in Dhaka.

Commenting on the nomination, US foreign policy analyst John Danilovich wrote in a Facebook post on Wednesday (September 3) that Brent Christensen is the right person to serve as ambassador during this crucial time for Bangladesh. He expressed hope that the US Senate would swiftly confirm the nomination
