Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) has established a six-member committee to investigate the recent unrest at the campus, which included the confinement of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A K Fazlul Haque Bhuiyan and nearly 250 faculty members in an auditorium for approximately eight hours, as well as acts of vandalism.

The committee was formed on Tuesday following directives from Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A K Fazlul Haque Bhuiyan, according to an official order signed by Acting Registrar Agriculturist Dr. Helal Uddin.

Professor Md. Rafiqul Islam Sardar, Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries and President of the BAU Teachers’ Association, has been appointed as the head of the committee. Dr. Md. Manjur Hossain, Deputy Registrar of Establishment Branch-2, will act as the member secretary.

Other committee members include Prof. Dr. Mohammad Golzarul Aziz of the Department of Food Engineering and Technology, Prof. Dr. Kazi Farhad Qadir, Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman Khan of the Department of Agricultural Finance and Banking, and Muh. Enamul Haque, Additional Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department-1. The panel has been tasked with submitting its findings and recommendations as promptly as possible.

The unrest reportedly began after students from the Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary submitted a memorandum on August 7 demanding a combined degree program to enhance their employment prospects.

In response, the Vice-Chancellor had formed a separate committee on August 12 to review the request.

The recommendations from that committee were later presented at an emergency Academic Council meeting on August 31, attended by 251 faculty members. Following the discussion, the council unanimously decided to award three degrees, aiming to meet student demands and resolve the issue.
