Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus joined Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and FAO Director-General Dr Qu Dongyu in inaugurating the new office of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) headquarters in Rome on Tuesday.

According to Chief Adviser’s Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, the Global Alliance—co-founded by Brazil and Bangladesh—represents a long-standing vision first proposed by President Lula nearly a decade ago.

The three leaders formally opened the new facility, symbolically shaking hands inside the office, marking what they described as a crucial milestone in the global effort to eradicate hunger and poverty.

In his remarks, Prof Yunus called for united international action, saying, “Let’s work together to fight hunger and combat poverty.”

Both President Lula and Dr Qu highlighted the initiative’s potential to foster coordinated global responses to food insecurity, particularly amid growing crises in Gaza and Sudan, where famine looms, and as more than 300 million people worldwide remain food insecure.

The ceremony was attended by several Brazilian ministers as well as Bangladesh’s Food Adviser Ali Imam Majumder and Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter.
