Non-government MPO-listed teachers, who are demanding increases in house rent, medical, and festival allowances, across the country have announced a nationwide hunger strike and teachers’ rally.

The new phase of protest is set to begin Monday (October 20) at Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka.

The announcement came Sunday night from Professor Delwar Hossain Azizi, member secretary of Shikhya Jatiyakaran Prottashi Jote. He said the teachers’ indefinite hunger strike would continue until their demands are met.

“From tomorrow, no teacher will conduct classes or perform administrative duties. Exam invigilation, office work—everything will remain suspended,” Azizi declared.

Rejecting the education adviser’s call to resume classes, he added, “We have no confidence in his assurances. Our movement will continue and, if necessary, will evolve into a one-point demand for nationalization.”

Meanwhile, the Finance Division has approved an increase in house rent allowance for MPO-listed teachers and staff at private educational institutions. According to a circular issued Sunday by Deputy Secretary Mariam Mitu, the allowance will now be 5 percent of the basic salary, with a minimum of Tk 2,000, effective from November 1.

The circular said the decision was made considering the government’s current budgetary constraints.
