Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Senior Joint Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), today raised concerns about the unplanned and unauthorized construction of buildings in Dhaka, highlighting the apparent disregard for the city’s Building Code.

Speaking at a Doa Mahfil (prayer gathering) at Nayapaltan, held to commemorate the late former Vice President of the Jatiyatabadi Swecchasebak Dal, Saiful Islam Potu, Rizvi noted that many constructions in the city are being carried out without adherence to earthquake safety standards. “No one follows the Building Code relevant to earthquakes. Buildings are being raised floor after floor without proper oversight,” he said.

Rizvi further criticized the destruction of natural water bodies in the city. He said, “Land grabbers have destroyed canals, wetlands, and rivers in Dhaka. Unauthorized constructions are taking place widely, yet the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) appears to be paying little attention.”

He added that some individuals involved in such illegal activities later gain political prominence and accumulate wealth through these practices. “These occurrences have reportedly increased during the current government’s tenure,” he remarked.

During the event, Rizvi also paid tribute to Saiful Islam Potu, highlighting his contributions to political movements. “Saiful was a committed leader. Despite the government’s challenges and oppression, he consistently supported movements and struggles,” Rizvi said.

The statements underscore ongoing concerns regarding urban development oversight and compliance with construction regulations in Dhaka, which experts say are critical for ensuring both environmental sustainability and public safety.
