NBR Extends Income Tax Filing Deadline for 2025–26, Encourages E-Return Submissions

Economy Desk

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has announced a one-month extension for individual taxpayers to submit their income tax returns for the fiscal year 2025–26, moving the new deadline to 31 December 2025.

In a separate order, the NBR stated that taxpayers facing registration-related issues in the e-return system may apply to their respective Deputy Commissioners of Taxes by 15 December 2025, providing specific justification for their inability to file online.

This year, online filing of income tax returns has been made mandatory for all individual taxpayers, with exemptions for certain groups. These include senior citizens aged 65 or above, physically disabled or specially-abled taxpayers, Bangladeshi citizens residing abroad, legal representatives filing on behalf of deceased taxpayers, and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh. Although exempted, these taxpayers may still voluntarily file returns online.

Authorized representatives of taxpayers, including income tax lawyers, chartered accountants, cost and management accountants, and chartered secretaries, are also permitted to submit e-returns on behalf of their clients. Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad are not required to file online but can register in the e-return system by submitting information such as passport number, National ID, and email address to ereturn@etaxnbr.gov.bd
