The Minister for International Development and La Francophonie, Global Affairs, Canada, Marie-Claude Bibeau called on the State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md. Shahriar Alam MP at State Guest House Padma today.
Benoit Préfontaine, High Commissioner of Canada to Bangladesh and Mizanur Rahman, High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Canada along with officials from both the sides were present during the meeting.
Marie-Claude Bibeau just concluded her two-day visit to different Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar from 21-22 November and shared her experience with the State Minister for Foreign Affairs during the meeting.
The State Minister recalled with deep gratitude the continuous development assistance from Canada for rebuilding the war ravaged economy of Bangladesh immediately after our War of Independence in 1971. The State Minister updated her on the Rohingya issue. He underlined that Bangladesh is looking forward to their immediate repatriation to Myanmar in line with the five-point proposal given by the Prime Minister at 72nd session of the UN General Assembly in September. He also deeply appreciated the strong position of the Canadian Government on the Rohingya issue and requested for its continuous political support on this issue. The Canadian International Development Minister assured him of Canada’s full support in this regard.
The Meeting was followed by a lunch hosted by A H M Mustafa Kamal, Minister of Planning in honour of the visiting Canadian Minister for International Development and La Francophonie.
Tofail Ahmed, Minister of Commerce, Dr. Dipu Moni, Chairperson, Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Md. Shahriar Alam MP, State Minister for Foreign Affairs and Meher Afroz Chumki, State Minister for Ministry of Women and Children Affairs also attended the lunch. They highlighted the socio-economic achievements of Bangladesh and discussed in details the issues of bilateral interest.
This is a Ministerial level visit from the Canadian side in decades.
