The final approval for the ‘honorable separation’ of seven government colleges affiliated with Dhaka University (DU) has been granted.
The decision was made at the fifth Syndicate meeting of the current year, held on Thursday, April 24. The meeting, which began at 5 PM, was chaired by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan.
After the meeting, Munshi Shams Uddin Ahmed, the acting Registrar of the university, informed the media about the decision.
He stated that from the academic year 2024-25, the seven colleges will no longer conduct admission under Dhaka University. This decision marks the formal process of honorable separation for both institutions.
Munshi Shams Uddin Ahmed added that after the separation, the admission tests for the current academic session will be conducted under the proposed structure for these colleges. If Dhaka University’s assistance is needed in this process, the university authorities will ensure their support.
Establishment of Dhaka Central University
A new university, ”Dhaka Central University”, will be established through the separation of these seven colleges.
Regarding the separation of the seven colleges, the Registrar mentioned that the academic council of Dhaka University reviewed the matter on Wednesday, and the Syndicate meeting today approved the decision. The official notification will be issued, and the decision will be sent to the University Grants Commission (UGC).
In February, the UGC had sent a proposal to the Ministry of Education regarding interim measures for the colleges. On March 2, the Ministry approved the UGC’s recommendation and requested the Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University to take necessary actions immediately.
In 2017, seven colleges in the capital were affiliated with Dhaka University: Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Shaheed Sohrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Girls College, Mirpur Government Bangla College, and Government Titumir College. These colleges serve nearly 200,000 students.
Meanwhile, the establishment of Dhaka Central University, which will merge these seven colleges, is underway. The UGC proposed the name for the new university on March 16, and the proposal has already been sent to the Ministry of Education.
Until the new university is established, the seven colleges will continue to operate under an interim administration, with the structure to be announced by the end of this month.
