Former US President Donald Trump said Sunday that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky could bring the war with Russia to a quick end if he chose to, but warned that retaking Crimea or Ukraine joining NATO are not viable options.
“President Zelenskyy of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
He added that Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014 during the Obama administration, is no longer negotiable: “No getting back Obama given Crimea (12 years ago, without a shot being fired!), and NO GOING INTO NATO BY UKRAINE. Some things never change!!!”
Trump’s comments come just ahead of a scheduled meeting at the White House between Zelensky and US President Joe Biden, along with key European leaders. The former president has long criticized US support for Ukraine and previously said he could resolve the conflict quickly if re-elected in 2024.
