Prime Minister Tarique Rahman concluded a two-day official visit to Malaysia on Monday, reaffirming Bangladesh’s commitment to strengthening both bilateral and multilateral relations between the two nations. The visit, which took place at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, focused on enhancing deep-rooted diplomatic, economic, and people-to-people connectivity. Accompanied by his wife, Zubaida Rahman, the prime minister emphasized that the relationship is built on decades of historical cooperation and shared regional goals.
Expressing his gratitude for the warm reception extended by the Malaysian government, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman noted that the discussions with his counterpart, Anwar Ibrahim, aimed to solidify cooperation across multiple sectors. He underscored the enduring bonds between Dhaka and Kuala Lumpur, highlighting that the partnership extends beyond mutual agreements toward a broader commitment to regional progress and shared prosperity.
The premier also highlighted the deep historical lineage of Bangladesh-Malaysia relations, referencing the foundational diplomatic efforts laid during the tenures of his late father, former President Ziaur Rahman, and his mother, former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. This long-standing diplomatic history has laid the groundwork for contemporary collaboration, particularly in labor migration, trade, and technological exchange. Malaysia remains one of the largest destinations for Bangladeshi expatriate workers and a key economic partner in the Southeast Asian region.
During the official tour, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman also held a high-level meeting with the King of Malaysia, Sultan Ibrahim ibni Sultan Iskandar. The prime minister expressed sincere appreciation for the monarch’s time and warmth, characterizing the interaction as a testament to the high level of mutual respect between the two heads of state. The meeting is viewed by foreign policy analysts as a significant step in elevating diplomatic protocols and state-level engagement between Dhaka and Kuala Lumpur.
Beyond state-level diplomacy, the visit encompassed critical discussions regarding economic investment, particularly in the telecommunications sector. Interactions during the tour included high-level talks with top corporate executives, including the CEO of Axiata Group, focusing on expanding telecom infrastructure and facilitating the rollout of 5G technology in Bangladesh. This aligns with the government’s current priorities to modernise Bangladesh’s digital framework and attract foreign direct investment (FDI) from major Southeast Asian conglomerates.
As his first official state visit to Malaysia since assuming office, the tour marks a strategic milestone for the current administration’s foreign policy. Industry insiders and diplomatic experts suggest that the successful conclusion of these talks will likely accelerate bilateral agreements on manpower export, trade tariff reductions, and technological partnerships. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman reiterated his commitment to working closely with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to transform these diplomatic dialogues into multifaceted, actionable partnerships in the coming years.
