DHAKA — Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon and Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee are scheduled to depart Dhaka for Beijing on Tuesday night. The high-profile cabinet members will join the advanced components of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s official delegation currently preparing for the premier’s upcoming state visit to China.
According to diplomatic and administrative sources, the two ministers will reinforce the executive delegation ahead of the formal arrival of the premier. Their early presence in the Chinese capital is aimed at finalizing the frameworks of bilateral agreements and coordinating ministerial-level briefings before the core summits begin.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to land in Beijing on Thursday to launch his first official bilateral tour of the People’s Republic of China since assuming office. The state visit is viewed by regional analysts as a cornerstone diplomatic initiative for the administration, aimed at diversifying international cooperation and securing strategic economic partnerships.
During the visit, high-level diplomatic engagements and bilateral talks are scheduled between Prime Minister Rahman and the top Chinese leadership. Discussions are expected to focus heavily on trade, infrastructure development, water resource management, technology transfers, and regional stability.
A central highlight of the multi-day diplomatic tour will be the formal signing of numerous bilateral instruments. Government officials indicated that approximately 15 to 17 agreements, memoranda of understanding (MoUs), and protocols are currently finalized or in the final stages of negotiation. These instruments are expected to cover a wide array of sectors, including digital infrastructure expansion, broadcasting cooperation, agricultural modernization, and logistical assistance for climate-resilient water management frameworks.
The participation of Minister Swapon and Minister Anee underscores the specific priorities of the Bangladeshi government during this state visit. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has recently sought international collaboration to modernize Bangladesh’s media, broadcasting infrastructure, and digital information systems. Concurrently, the Ministry of Water Resources faces crucial, ongoing negotiations regarding transboundary river management, delta governance, and flood-mitigation infrastructure, areas where China remains a vital technical and financial partner in Asia.
Diplomatic observers note that the visit serves as an opportunity for the administration to advance its “Bangladesh First” foreign policy, which balances robust regional ties with targeted development investments. This bilateral tour is expected to set the trajectory for Dhaka-Beijing economic and political relations over the next decade.
