Iran’s parliament has given initial approval to a proposal that could lead to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz — a vital maritime chokepoint for global oil trade.
The decision, made on Sunday local time, will now be reviewed by the country’s Supreme National Security Council for a final verdict.
The Strait of Hormuz handles nearly 20% of the world’s oil shipments, making it one of the most critical waterways for international energy supply. While the parliament has signaled readiness to act, the closure is not yet confirmed, according to a report by NDTV.
Esmail Kowsari, a parliamentarian and senior commander in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), told the Young Journalists Club that the matter remains under consideration and would be implemented if necessary.
Iran’s state broadcaster Press TV reported that while the legislative body has backed the motion in principle, the final decision lies with the country’s highest security authority, the Supreme National Security Council.
