The body of veteran journalist and columnist Bibhuranjan Sarkar, who went missing on Thursday morning, has been recovered from the Meghna River in Munshiganj.
The 71-year-old’s remains were found floating near Kalagachhia, on the border between Narayanganj and Munshiganj, on Friday afternoon.
Confirming the matter, Kalagachhia River Police Outpost officer-in-charge Saleh Ahmed Pathan said that the visual identification — including clothing and personal items — matched the description of the missing journalist.
The body was cross-referenced with a photograph provided by Ramna Police Station, which had recorded a General Diary (GD) after his disappearance.
Bibhuranjan was last seen leaving his home of Siddheshwari in Dhaka, around 10:00 AM on August 21, telling family he was heading to his office. He was not carrying his mobile phone, and no trace was found during an extensive search.
His family has been informed and is traveling to Munshiganj for formal identification. The body has been sent to Munshiganj General Hospital for autopsy.
A prominent voice in Bangladeshi journalism, Sarkar was widely known for his incisive columns and long-standing contribution to print media.
The media community has expressed shock and grief over the incident. Journalist organizations are urging authorities to conduct a prompt and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
