Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Monday stated that there is no security risk for anyone in Bangladesh, affirming the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of all citizens. He emphasized that special security arrangements would be provided for individuals requiring additional protection.

The Home Adviser made these remarks at the Bangladesh Secretariat following a Core Committee meeting on law and order, responding to questions regarding potential security risks to BNP Acting Chairperson Tarique Rahman upon his return to the country. Jahangir clarified that the meeting did not specifically address the security of Tarique Rahman. Instead, the discussions focused on preparations for the forthcoming national parliamentary elections, maintaining law and order, controlling drug trafficking, monitoring the border situation, securing looted firearms, and curbing provocative content on social media platforms.

Jahangir emphasized that the Home Ministry is fully prepared to ensure the protection of all individuals in Bangladesh. A key point of discussion during the meeting was the deployment strategy for law enforcement agencies at polling centers, particularly those considered potentially vulnerable. He stated that the authorities would assess the security requirements of each polling center before deploying personnel but did not provide specific details regarding the number or location of high-risk centers.

The Home Adviser also highlighted progress in the procurement of body-worn cameras for law enforcement officers, stating that the government would purchase an adequate number to meet operational requirements. These measures are intended to enhance transparency and accountability during law enforcement operations, especially in the context of election-related duties.

Regarding border security during the election period, Jahangir noted that authorities had instructed all relevant agencies to prevent any unauthorized entry into Bangladesh territory. He also responded to queries about allegations of police superintendents being transferred based on political advice, stating that no such claims had been brought to his attention.

When asked about the implementation of recommendations from the investigation commission formed to probe the 2009 Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) mutiny, Jahangir stated that he had not yet reviewed the commission’s report but affirmed that the government intends to implement its recommendations in due course.

The Home Adviser reiterated that the primary focus of the meeting was to ensure that all necessary preparations are in place for the upcoming parliamentary elections, emphasizing comprehensive security planning, law enforcement readiness, and preventive measures against potential threats to public order.

These measures reflect the government’s broader strategy to maintain stability and safeguard citizens during a critical electoral period, reinforcing confidence in institutional preparedness ahead of the elections.
